1. Go to Coupons

Log in to your Per Diem merchant dashboard, open the Marketing dropdown, and select Coupons. Click + Create coupon.

2. Choose a coupon type

• Single coupon — one discount code customers apply themselves.
• Birthday coupon — sent automatically via push notification on each customer's birthday.
• Campaign — a single coupon paired with an in-app post, a homepage banner, and a push notification, built as one guided workflow.

3. Single coupon

• Details: enter a Discount code (must be uppercase) and a Discount amount ($ or %).
• Conditions: optionally require a minimum spend, and set a per-customer usage limit (default: no limit).
• Schedule: set an optional start date, choose "Never expires" or set an end date, and pick which days of the week the coupon is valid (default: every day). This is what covers offering a coupon only on specific days.
• Availability: check Mobile app only to hide the coupon from web ordering and in-store POS, making it redeemable only in your app.
• Eligible items: apply to your whole catalog, or uncheck to restrict to specific items/categories.
• Locations: all locations by default, or select specific ones.
• Where the discount applies: choose whether the discount hits the full order total, only the highest-priced eligible item, or every eligible item separately (this last option can multiply your discount — use with care).
• Click Save.

4. Birthday coupon

A much lighter setup than a regular coupon:

• Enter a Discount code and Discount amount.
• Set a Redemption window (1–7 days, default 7) — how long after their birthday, starting at midnight, a customer has to redeem it.
• That's it. Birthday coupons always apply to all locations, all items, all days of the week, and can be used once per customer — none of that is configurable.
• Click Save.

5. Campaign

A guided, skippable 4-step wizard:

1. Coupon code setup — same fields as a Single coupon (code, amount, conditions, schedule, availability, eligible items, locations, discount application method).
2. Write a post — toggle "In-app post" on/off. If on, choose a post type, add a title (200 char), body (1000 char), button text (50 char), a link (Item, External URL, etc.), and an optional image.
3. Create a banner — write banner copy, choose locations, set a start/end date, and optionally add an image. (This is the same banner engine covered in the banners article — full screen/announcement banner settings apply here too.)
4. Schedule push notification — write the push message, choose the target audience, and set a send time.

You can skip any step. Review everything on the final preview screen, then click Save to launch the coupon and all its assets together.

6. Switching to Square Automated Coupons

‍Per Diem also supports syncing coupons directly from Square instead of managing them natively — but this isn't self-service. It's a feature-flagged capability: contact Per Diem support to have it enabled for your store. Once enabled, toggle on Square Coupons in the Coupons section, grant Per Diem read access to your Square account when prompted, and your Square-side coupons will sync into the app.

Important: turning this on deactivates all existing Per Diem coupons — customers can only use Square Coupons until you switch back.

7. BOGO (Buy One, Get One) deals

BOGO deals are not created in Per Diem — they're set up directly in Square Dashboard → Discounts, as an Automatic (not manual) discount:

• Create a discount, enable Automatic discounts.
• Choose items or categories, and set the minimum quantity that triggers the deal (e.g., 2 for a basic BOGO, or higher for "buy 5 get 1" packaged deals).
• Set the discount the qualifying item receives (100% off for a truly free item, or a partial percentage/fixed amount).
• Optionally schedule it to specific dates/times (e.g., happy hour).
• Save, then test it in your POS or app before relying on it.

Note: naming a regular Per Diem coupon "BOGO" (e.g., a 50%-off code called BOGO) is not the same thing as a true Buy-One-Get-One deal — a regular coupon can't trigger based on quantity purchased. If you want an actual "buy X get one free" mechanic, it has to be built in Square Discounts as described above, not as a Per Diem coupon.
