Meet Bridgette Johnson: The Vision Behind Central Cafe and Juice Bar

TLDR

Before the doors of Central Cafe and Juice Bar ever opened in Seattle's Central District, co-owner Bridgette Johnson was walking her path — quite literally. Each morning, her walk to the cafe is a moment of reflection, where ideas take shape and plans for the day begin to brew. For Bridgette, Central Cafe is a reflection of Bridgette Johnson’s creativity, a welcoming space rooted in her community, and a result of steady vision and determination.

Alongside her partner Kevin Johnson, Bridgette launched Central Cafe in January 2020, just months before the pandemic would challenge businesses across the country. But armed with preparation and a clear mission, the duo navigated it with heart and flexibility. Bridgette’s experience working at Whole Foods gave her insight into customer service and quality standards, which she has translated into every corner of the cafe’s operations. From its cheerful menu of fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, breakfast wraps, and organic coffee sourced from Fulcrum, to its warm interior designed with thrifted and repurposed finds, the space is unmistakably hers.

Purpose-Driven Hospitality

Bridgette's vision for Central Cafe goes beyond food and drink. As a Black and women-owned business, the cafe stands as a proud symbol of empowerment. The building’s transformation from a former barbecue joint to a thriving juice bar took serious effort—a mix of passion, hands-on renovation, and family support. Today, it features a colorful, cozy interior filled with art deco charm and community-centered energy.

For Bridgette, running Central Cafe is deeply personal. She wants high school students from the nearby schools to walk in, see someone who looks like them behind the counter, and believe they too can dream big. The cafe welcomes everyone, but it carries a powerful message for young Black creatives: you belong in this space.

Her leadership also extends to her team and neighbors. From giving leftover food to a nearby shelter to experimenting with holiday specials and expanding into beer, wine, and spirits—Bridgette runs the cafe with intention. It's never about chasing trends, but about responding to her customers with something meaningful and fresh.

Growth Fueled by Community and Creativity

What makes Central Cafe and Juice Bar stand out is the variety of its offerings and the experience it delivers. Whether you're there for a matcha latte, a cozy pastry, or a plant-forward sandwich, the menu reflects Bridgette's belief that everyone should find something they love. And thanks to her approach of careful planning—along with an openness to change—the business continues to grow and thrive.

Bridgette is constantly dreaming up ways to enhance her guests’ experiences. Each team meeting is an opportunity to collaborate, test ideas, and bring new flavors to life. Central Cafe isn’t static; it evolves with its neighborhood and listens closely to the people it serves.

Final Thoughts

Bridgette Johnson has turned a long-standing neighborhood building into a modern-day gathering space that feels fresh and rooted at the same time. Central Cafe and Juice Bar thrives because it reflects the personality, planning, and purpose of its owner. And as Bridgette continues to walk to work each morning, her path forward is still being imagined—with bold ideas, community spirit, and plenty of fresh juice along the way.
